Women's Soccer Falls to Westfield State, 2-1 in Opening Round of NCAA Tournament

NCAA TOURNAMENT-FIRST ROUND

THE BASICS 

Score: Westfield State 2, Emerson 1

Records: Emerson Lions (12-4-5, 7-1-3 NEWMAC); Westfield State Owls (16-3-1)

Location: Scranton, PA. (Weiss Field)

Date: November 12, 2022

The Lead: Junior  Simone Barragan-Shaw netted the lone goal for the Lions but Westfield State was able to come away with a late victory as they scored the game winning goal in the second overtime as they ended the Lions 2022 season.

INSIDE THE NUMBERS 


EMERSON

Simone Barragan-Shaw: 1 goal

Gina Lukoskie: 1 goal

GOALIE: Amara Schaub: 2 goals allowed on nine shots with seven saves through 90 minutes

 

WESTFIELD STATE

Delaney Parker: 1 goal

Morgan Berthiaume: 1 goal

GOALIE: Lauryn Davis: 1 goal allowed on eight shots with seven saves through 90 minutes

 

HOW IT HAPPENED 

46"- Westfield State ended the scoring drought for both sides when Morgan Berthiaume found the back of the net for the Owls. Six minutes into the second half, Westfield State now held a 1-0 lead over the Lions.

81": With just under 10 minutes remaining in regulation, the Lions were able to even the score and keep their season alive. Junior Simone Barragan-Shaw beat the Owls goalkeeper on a pass from classmate Gina Lukoskie. The game was now tied 1-1 with nine minutes to play in regulation. 

  • Regulation would end in a 1-1 tie as both sides prepared for two-ten-minute overtime periods to decide a winner.
  • The first ten minutes ended with neither side scoring a goal.

100": Within the first minute of the second overtime, Westfield State's Delaney Parker scored, what would ultimately be the game winning goal for the Owls.

  • Westfield State closed out the final ten minutes, keeping Emerson off the board and eliminating the Lions from the NCAA Tournament.

 

UP NEXT

The Lions close out their 2022 campaign as their most successful in program history. With an overall record of 12-4-5 and a NEWMAC record of 7-1-3, the Lions won the 2022 NEWMAC Championship as well as having six players win major awards. The Lions coaching staff also won the 2022 NEWMAC Coaching Staff of the Year award. The Lions look to build on this historic season as they look ahead to 2023.
