Women's Soccer Triumphs In Double Overtime Thriller Quarterfinals Win Over Wheaton (MA), 3-2

The Lead: Down 2-1 in the second overtime period, junior Simone Barragan-Shaw and graduate Caitlin Johnston kept the Emerson women's soccer team's postseason run alive with a pair of goals within 32 seconds of one another to push the Lions over Wheaton (Mass.), 3-2, in the NEWMAC Quaterfinals on Tuesday night. 

With the win, Emerson women's soccer head coach, David Suvak, recorded his 100th win at the helm of the Lions. 




Johnston: two goals

Ainslee MacQuarrie: one assist

Simone Barragan-Shaw: one goal

GOALIE: Amara Schaub (W, 9-3-5) - two goals allowed on four shots with two saves through 110 minutes



Sadie Recht: one goal

Lily Brown: one goal

GOALIE: Patricia Bandrup (3-5) - three goals allowed on 14 shots with 11 saves through 110 minutes



19": Emerson gave themselves the early one-goal lead nearing the halfway point of the opening half. MacQuarrie drove the ball just outside the left post and crossed her pass over to Johnston. Johnston collected the ball within the post and snuck in the first goal past the feet of Bandrup. 

78": Wheaton locked up the score at 1-all when Recht collected the deflection of Schaub's goal kick from outside the right post and booted the ball into the upper left corner. 

95": Kate Wickenheisser crossed a shot from the right side of the box that went off Schaub's hands and back into play. Brown was there to collect rebound and put in the go-ahead 2-1 goal with 4:29 gone in the first overtime period 

110": A shot was fired off a Wheaton defender within the right post before Barragan-Shaw collected the rebound and fired her shot within the far left post to even the game at 2-all  with 43 ticks in left in the second overtime.

110" (2): 32 seconds after Barragan-Shaw leveled the game at 2-all, Johnson intercepted a clearing pass from Bandrup in Wheaton's defensive zone and carried the ball inside the box to draw her off her line. Johnston then flicked the game-winning goal into the far right post with just 11 seconds left. 



  • Emerson's season continues and will head off to No. 2 Babson on Thursday, November 3rd.
