Gibbons & Houston Recognized In NEWMAC Basketball Weekly Honors

WESTWOOD, Mass. - The New England Women's & Men's Athletic Conference (NEWMAC) announced their weekly Athletes of the Week for competition ending on January 15th with representation from both men's and women's basketball teams. For the women, senior Chelsea Gibbons snagged Offensive Athlete of the Week. On the men's side, graduate Jarred Houston was tabbed Defensive Athlete of the Week for the second time this season. 


Reigning Defensive Player of the Year, Houston pulled down a combined 33 rebounds and tallied 30 points against Clark and No. 14 WPI this past week. All 20 of Houston's rebounds in Emerson's win over Clark were defensive as his 14th board of the game counted as his 1,000th career rebound. To round out The graduate also registered his 12th and 13th double-doubles this past week, which counts for the third most in Division III. He currently leads the NEWMAC in rebounds per game (13.2), total boards (198) and total blocks at 66. 



Gibbons's strength at the arc helped Emerson to their third straight win this past Monday, which included a NEWMAC opening win over Mount Holyoke on Saturday afternoon. During two games, Gibbons averaged 19.5 points per game while she shot 50% from the field and 61.5% from three-point range. The senior also dished out 10 assists, which included six against Mount Holyoke.
