The Lead: Junior Chelsea Gibbons led the Emerson women's basketball team with nine points and four steals as the Lions were upended, 79-34, by No. 21 Smith on Wednesday night at Brown & Plofker Gym.

HOW IT HAPPENED 

  • At the 6:42 mark of the first quarter, Emerson quickly found themselves down double-figures after Smith powered out a 13-2 run that started and ended with three's from Ruffner and Clairmont. 
  • Smith saw its lead sit at 16 with 3:51 to go in the frame before Deslauriers was able to knock down a basket to break the Pioneers' scoring streak with the score at 18-4. 
  • The Pioneers knocked down a 6-0 run to up their lead up to 24-4 as the visitors scoring was halted by successful trip to the free throw stripe by junior Chloe Allen with the score at 24-6. 
  • Deslauriers knocked down a pair of shots at the charity stripe at the five second mark of the first, which would be the baskets of the quarter with the score at 30-10. 
  • Emerson was held to shooting 30.8% from the floor and were outscored, 12-8, by Smith as Bushee paced the Lions with four points. At the end of the first half, Emerson trailed Smith, 42-18. 
  • Within the third quarter, the Lions were once again held to eight points with Gibbons leading the way with five points in the frame. Smith poured in 20 points and held Emerson to shooting 23.1%. Emerson now faced a 62-26 deficit as they entered the fourth. 
  • In the fourth frame, Emerson was held to another eight points and were outscored, 17-8, with Allen pacing the Lions with four points in the frame. Emerson did not attempt a triple within the fourth and shot 20% as the Lions were upended, 79-34
