The Lead: The Emerson women's basketball team slipped in its first setback of a young 2021 season against cross-Commons foe, Suffolk, 72-42, on Tuesday night at Smith Court.

HOW IT HAPPENED 

  • Emerson converted 16.7% of its shots from the field in the opening quarter and tallied six points that included two from senior Katie Beckmann and four by junior Carla Pelino, as the Lions were outscored 26-6 through the first 10 minutes.
  • The second quarter saw Emerson and Suffolk each tally 11 points with the Lions going 4-for-4 at the charity stripe, but the visitors still found themselves in a double-figure deficit as they entered the half. 
  • Suffolk slowed down the Emerson offense and had the Lions putting up eight points through the third frame with Beckmann, Pelino and junior Chelsea Gibbons each recording a shot. 
  • The fourth quarter saw more scoring on Emerson's end with the bench leading the way with all 17 points, in which Herbert dropped seven of and Bruno followed with five, as the Lions fell to the Rams, 72-42.
