The Lead: A quick start for the Lions was not enough as Emerson dropped both games of a doubleheader to the Coast Guard Academy Bears on Saturday

HOW IT HAPPENED 

  • Emerson came out swinging to start the first game, scoring four runs in the first inning.  Mary Kuczkowski (Litchfield, N.H.) drove in Lindsey Lowe (Porter Ranch, Calif.) to open the scoring with a single to center field.  

  • Claire Overton (Wayne, Penn.) reached first on a throwing error which brought home Calli Pratt (Dighton, Mass.) , A passed ball moved Overton to third and brought Kuczkowski across home plate.

  • Makenzie Killough (Attleboro, Mass.) drove in Overton with a single to left field, giving the Lions a 4-0 lead after one half inning.  

  • Coast Guard cut the lead in half in the bottom of the second, scoring two runs through a bases loaded walk and a pop up to second base. 

  • The Bears took the lead in the bottom half of the fifth inning when Katie Becker singled to right field to drive in a run.  Two batters later Selena Serna doubled to center field, driving home Becker and Kayla Yoshioka Montalvo to take a 5-3 lead. 

  • Coast Guard added five more runs in the bottom half of the fifth frame, with Becker driving in the last run on a sacrifice fly.  

  • Emerson was unable to make up the deficit, falling 10-4 in the first game.

HOW IT HAPPENED 

  • Becker continued hitting well in game 2, starting the scoring with a two RBI in the bottom of the first inning to give the Bears a 2-0 lead.  

  • Coast Guard added six runs in the bottom of the second inning, taking an 8-0 lead on the game.  

  • Emerson was unable to overcome the deficit, but Karagan Knowles (Tuscon, Ariz.) and Myranda Bourque (El Cajon, Calif.) came in to pitch and did not allow a hit or run between the two of them over 2.1 inning pitched.
