The Lead: Opening up their season on Tuesday, the Emerson Softball team fell to the Mary Washington Eagles 5-4 despite a four run second inning from Emerson, headlined by a home run from Senior Micaela Dix (White House Station, N.J.)

HOW IT HAPPENED

  • The teams went scoreless in the first inning, before the Eagles struck first in the top of second inning with a sacrifice fly from Gracie Walton to drive in Hadlea Valera.
  • Emerson scored quickly in the bottom of the frame when Rebekah Czukoski (South Orange, N.J.) doubling to drive in Maddie Tomich (Lithia, Fla.) and tie the game.  Mallory Shofi (Ridgefield, Conn.) followed up with a single to drive in Czukoski and gave the Lions a 2-1 lead.  Senior Micaela Dix (White House Station, N.J.) hit a two run home run in the same frame, giving Emerson a 4-1 lead after two inning. 
  • The score stayed the same until the top of the sixth inning when Grace Drury drove in Megan Hibbs on a double.  Drury later scored in the inning, cutting the Lions' lead to 4-3.
  • Danielle Newman singled in Maggie Mrowka for the Eagles to tie the score in the top of the seventh inning.
  • Hibbs drove in Hannah Bruns on a single in the top of the ninth inning, giving the Lions their first deficit since the second inning.  Emerson was unable to overcome the one run deficit in the bottom of the frame, falling 5-4 in nine innings.
