WESTWOOD, Mass. - With the safety and well-being of our students and campus communities being paramount and based on the ongoing spread of COVID-19 (2019 novel Coronavirus), the New England Women's and Men's Athletic Conference (NEWMAC) Presidents Council has unanimously made the difficult and challenging decision to cancel the NEWMAC Spring Regular Season Conference Schedule and NEWMAC Spring Championships, effective March 16, 2020.
We recognize the disappointment that this decision will bring to our student-athletes, families and fans but we believe this is in the best interest of the safety and well-being of our students and surrounding communities.
Individual institutions will decide the continued championship participation of winter teams and student-athletes who have qualified for the NCAAs. In addition, individual institutions will decide on the status of their spring programs in non-conference competition.
After careful consideration in conjunction with the decision of the NEWMAC, the Emerson Athletic Department has decided to cancel all non-conference practice and competition. Athletic Director Pat Nicol on the decision: "Emerson's decision to cancel all sports reflects the philosophy of student health and safety being essential to the student athlete experience. The responsibility to ensure the well-being of our student athletes will always take precedent in difficult decision making."
