No. 2 Women's Lacrosse Downed In Sudden Death Overtime By No. 7 Norwich
BOSTON, Mass. – A thrilling double overtime sudden death game didn't fall the way of the No. 7 Emerson Women's Lacrosse Team Wednesday as they fell 9-8 to the No. 7 Norwich Cadets in GNAC Quarterfinal action. The loss wraps the year for the Lions who finish at 10-7 overall while Norwich improves to 6-7 and onto the GNAC Semifinals.
From the start it looked to be a close match-up as the Cadets came out with a fast start for two quick goals in the first three minutes of play. The Lions recouped though as Tracie Lombardo got Emerson on the board first with a goal off a quick pass from Mackenzie Johnson. Less than three minutes later Tayllar Righini put in the equalizer to make it 2-2.
The defense stepped up for both teams through the next 12 minutes of action as both goalies put up four saves each with Emerson just barely edging NU eight to seven in ground balls. NU stepped up for the next goal with under eight minutes to go. Mackenzie Johnson answered with a goal of her own to knot it again though as both teams headed into the half with a 3-3 score.
The second half started out with Norwich taking the lead again, but EC was ready to fight as Kanika Misra connected with Guerin Morissette for a goal before Tayllar Righini put away the go-ahead goal. From there the back-and-forth commenced again with another NU goal which was followed up by Kanika Misra going solo.
Norwich tied it yet again before Alex Corrado helped the Lions jump out 7-6 with 7:27 remaining. With the Lions hustling to close the door, the Cadets just kept coming at EC as they finally put away a goal at 6:40 to make it 7-7 where the score would remain until the end of regulation.
Headed into OT the Cadets struck first but Tayllar Righini threw down a nasty shot to tie it again and send it into sudden death overtime. It wasn't long into sudden death though before Norwich's Grace Fitzpatrick won the draw control to sprint down the field and put away the final touches on the Norwich upset.
The loss wraps up the Emerson Women's Lacrosse 2013 season. They'd like to thank all their fans, friends and families for their support throughout the season.
