Women's Lacrosse's Late Heroics Pull Off 13-12 Win Over Salve Regina
BOSTON, Mass. – A full-out team effort spelled success Monday night as the Emerson Women's Lacrosse Team pulled off a electric 13-12 win over the Salve Regina Seahawks. With the win the Lions improve to 4-4 on the year while SRU falls to 1-4.
The first half saw the Seahawks surge out to an early lead on the Lions as SRU surged with four straight unanswered goals. The Lions recouped though in the ninth minute of action with Chelsea Phillips leading the way again with a free position shot that sparked the offensive assault.
Libby Murphy helped spur the next two goals adding an assist before Phebe McKelvey set her up for one of her own before EC tied the games with a nasty goal with an alley-oop from Chelsea Phillips that Tracie Lombardo threw down to make it 4-4.
From there the back-and-forth commenced as both teams nearly matched goal for goal until Salve put netted one in the last three seconds of the half to head into the break with SRU leading 9-8.
Coming out of the break the Lions looked more composed as they immediately took the lead back within 11 minutes scoring back-to-back goals. SRU's Jennifer Jones added one of her seven on the night to knot it. EC's offense put the heat on though which SRU couldn't handle as they gave Emerson two free position shot goals from Chelsea Phillips and Tayllar Righini.
Salve's Jennifer Jones struck again twice with under five minute to go to pull the score to an even 12. Coming down to the last three minutes it was Chelsea Phillips and Tracie Lombardo teaming up again to make the difference as Phillips put a nasty shot past SRU to put it to the 13-12 final.
The Lions return to GNAC action Wednesday as they travel to St. Joe's of Connecticut where they'll face the Bluejays in West Hartford, Conn. at 4 p.m.
