The Lead: The Emerson women's basketball team found themselves on the wrong side of its first NEWMAC setback of 2019 to Babson in a 73-56 setback to the Beavers on Tuesday night despite a double-double night from senior Charlie Boyle (Scotts Valley, Calif.). 


INSIDE THE  NUMBERS 

  • Boyle boasted a stat line of 14 points and 11 rebounds alongside four assists. with sophomore Sam Boyle (Scotts Valley, Calif.) scored 12 points on 6-of-10 shooting. 
  • Senior Natalie Busch (Weybridge, England) contributed 11 points and junior Quinn Madden (Mokena, Ill.) led all players with six helpers. 
  • Payton Ouimette recorded a double-double of 16 points and 14 boards and Téa Spellacy followed with 12 points and Emily Bonifacic contributed 10 points, while Jacqueline Jozefick added nine points and pulled down seven rebounds. 
  • Emerson was held to shooting 15.0% from beyond the arc (3-20) and outscored Babson within the paint, 28-22. 


HOW IT HAPPENED 

  • Emerson held onto a two-point 13-11 advantage to close out the first quarter before Babson powered out a 13-0 spurt to start off the second and ultimately gained control of the game.
  • Babson saw back-to-back three's from Jozefick and Bianca Tomassini with Ouimette converting a three-point play that helped the Beavers jump ahead 24-13 midway through the stanza.
  • The Lions fell behind 29-16 at the 2:38 mark of the quarter before the visitors were able to close the gap to 33-24 at the break. 
  • To start off the third, Babson quickly halted Emerson's momentum and banged out scores on five of its first six possessions. 
  • The duo of Spellacy and Katherine Tamulionis combined for 10 points in the midst of a 12-4 Babson run to extend Emerson's deficit to 45-30 with 7:05 to go in the frame. 
  • Thanks to seven points from Busch, Emerson clawed back within seven until the hosts answered with the next six points to push its lead up to 54-43. 
  • Emerson was held scoreless over a six minute span and thus allowed Babson to gain its biggest lead of the game (62-43) following back-to-back layups by Ouimette and a triple by Katie Jones.
