MEDFORD, Mass. - Despite a team-leading 24 points and nine rebounds from sophomore Geoffrey Gray (Newton, Mass.), the Emerson men's basketball team suffered a 87-72 loss to host No. 5 Tufts University in Cousens Gymnasium on Saturday afternoon in non conference action.
With the loss, Emerson falls to 2-2 as Tufts improves to 4-0.
While Tufts gained the early lead over Emerson, the two teams went back and forth through the first ten minutes of the game. Emerson remained within one of Tufts before Tom Palleschi dished out five points to push the Jumbos ahead at 21-16. At the end of the first half, the Jumbos held the seven point advantage over the Lions at 38-31.
In the first seven minutes of the second half, Tufts began to gain more ground and distance themselves away from Emerson. The Jumbos outscored the Lions 14-4 and gained a lengthy 13 point lead at 52-39 after a pair of free throws Palleschi. Tufts was able to hold a ten point lead over Emerson through the remainder of the half and closed out the 87-72 win.
Gray led Emerson with 24 points and nine rebounds, while junior Michael Sheng (Altadena, Calif.) and junior John Geary (Duxbury, Mass.) each added 14 points each. Sheng also had seven assists and two takeaways as freshman Ben Holding contributed 11 points off the bench.
Palleschi paced Tufts with a game-high 26 points and eight rebounds while Tarik Smith followed with 15 points, three steals and seven assists and Ben Engvall added 12 points. Everett Dayton matched Palleschi with eight rebounds.
Emerson returns to Brown & Plofker on Wednesday night as they open their home schedule against Dean College at 6:00 p.m. Tufts continues its home schedule on Tuesday night at 7:00 p.m. to play host to WPI.
